Urgent Primary Care (OOH)

Dr Keith Hawkins case study

Dr Keith Hawkins

111 GP

I'm in for the mix of patients.

I am a full-time GP partner in a practice but also work part time in Urgent Primary Care. Primarily, I am a 111 GP, which means I predominantly telephone triage and assess the calls. I am responsible for patient flow management and interfacing the WAST, NHS Wales Direct and Urgent Primary Care services. I deal with some of the more complex patients over the phone, and supervise the clinical pharmacists and nurses in the region.

Why do I work in Urgent Primary Care? I believe that the GP’s role doesn’t stop with in-hours practice. As GPs, we have a shared responsibility to care for our patients and to protect and develop our services. I also enjoy working in Urgent Primary Care because of the mix of urgent and acute patients I get to attend to. Getting to work with a multidisciplinary team is a really good opportunity to network in the GP community and work with different professions. The flexibility of working and the ability to earn on top of partnership earnings is great too.
